The One and Only Ivan

So I read the Newbery winner, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Now I must say I was very partial to Wonder by R.J. Palacio and I’m sad it didn’t win. However, the winner was good also (not as good, but good). It is about a gorilla living in a mall with an elephant & a dog for a friend. One day a new baby elephant comes & he promises to make it his mission to get her out of this cage and into a zoo where they can both be friends with animals like them. Since it’s from the gorilla’s POV I can see why he’s not interested in paragraphs but that part was kind of annoying. I read it in one sitting so it’s not long & I would suggest it to others. But it definitely didn’t stick with my like I feel Newbery’s should. I do like that it was partially based on a true story.
