Scooters: Digging in the Garden

First I did some announcements. Because last week I completely forgot. I told them about Summer Reading for babies (new this year) and showed them the craft so they could prepare their mom psyches (feet painting!).

OPENING SONG

(see last week’s post for words)

Book: Planting Seeds by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

(used shovels for digging parts of book)

SONG

(same as last week to encourage repetition, also used shovels)

Tune “The Farmer in the Dell”

(clap on first verse)

The garden in the yard, the garden in the yard

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(roll your hands)

First we’ll turn the soil, first we’ll turn the soil

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(dig with hands)

Then we’ll dig a hole, then we’ll dig a hole

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(plant in front)

Next we’ll plant the seeds, next we’ll plant the seeds

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(hand over hand)

We’ll cover them with dirt, we’ll cover them with dirt

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(watering can)

We’ll water til they’re wet, we’ll water til their wet

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

(wiggle fingers to the ceiling)

Soon the plants will grow, soon the plants will grow

Hi-ho the derry-o, the garden in the yard.

Book: Wee Little Bunny by Lauren Thompson

Since there was a bird in this book I brought out my finger puppet birds and we did a rhyme that a lot of my babies recognize from Mother Goose on the Loose.

RHYME

Two little dickey birds sitting on a cloud

(bounce fingers)

One named soft, the other named loud

(say soft and loud with their intonation)

Fly away soft, fly away loud

(fly them behind your back)

Come back soft, come back loud!

(bring fingers back out)

Book: Who’s in the Garden? by Phillis Gershator

(there’s a mole who digs so we kept using the shovels)

There’s a mole in this book that I was going to call a hedgehog but they all guessed it was a mole so then I had to make a transition to my hedgehog puppet. “Hedgehogs dig like moles too! And I have a hedgehog friend here today.” Or something like that. Everyone pet my hedgehog friend and then we did a peek-a-boo song in prep for my magnet board.

SONG

Peek-a-boo I see you

I see you hiding there.

Peek-a-boo I see you

I see you hiding there.

PEEK-A-BOO!

wordpress

MAGNET BOARD

(includes bush, rock wall, tree & hedgehog idea taken from here)

Hedgehog, hedgehog where can you be?

Behind a bush? Nooooo

Behind the rocks? Noooo

Behind the tree? Yesss!

CLOSING SONG

(see last week’s post for words)

After the books and rhymes we had free play with toys from Mother Goose on the Loose and then did our craft.
