Good Harbor by Anita Diamant

book

I love this writer, from what I can remember. Whenever someone asks me my favorite book of all time, I tell them The Red Tent. Every time I say it I think, I need to go back and read the Red Tent to ensure that I do actually like that book and that writer. I think reading this book helped confirm that I do like the author, I just need to re-visit the book.

One of the main reasons I picked up this book is because the main character lives in New England and is a Children’s librarian. How could I not love her? She’s also in her sixties and has breast cancer so that makes her a bit different than me. On a basic level, it’s about a friendship between two women who are in very different times in their lives. As someone who works with kids but has no kids, I often make friends with unsuspecting people that have lives very different from my own. So I can see how these two women were drawn to each other even without basic commonalities. Quick read.

The Wife by Meg Wolitzer

Whew. So sorry about the big gap in posts. I went off and got married last weekend so I was a bit MIA. However, the plane rides back and forth gave me a great opportunity for a lot of reading! This was one I finished before I even left.

book

I thought it would be a good, you’re going to be a wife book. Turns out it’s about a woman who wants a divorce. But it was still good. I previously tried to read Meg Wolitzer’s new book, The Interestings. It got a lot of buzz and I learned through an essay of hers that she’s actually Martha Stewart’s best friend. Weird huh. Anyway, I couldn’t finish The Interestings but I really enjoyed The Wife. I sort of guessed the twist halfway through the book but there was another twist on top of that that I did not guess. It was a bit slow in the middle but I’m glad I finished.

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

wedding

I picked up this book because most of the blurbs on the back were comparing it to Gone Girl. On Goodreads it’s also on the same list as Dear Daughter, which I have at my house right now. I think Gone Girl did a better job showing the secrets all the way through. This author waits until the last 50 pages to wham them all at you and had I not been determined to finish I would have stopped reading long before the shock factor. Which would have been disappointing because it is a really good book. My co-worker thinks I may have got bored because I don’t actually like mysteries or scary stories so maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy it up until the secrets came out. Who knows. But I’m glad I finished.
