Scott O’Dell Award

If winter is the time for Best Book lists then we can call January & February the time for awards. Not only do all the awards for movies and TV come to pass but all the awards for books are announced as well. First up, the Scott O’Dell Award. This award is for historical fiction. Scott O’Dell wrote the Island of the Blue Dolphins, among others. From the award’s website:

“Scott O’Dell established this award to encourage other writers — particularly new authors — to focus on historical fiction. He hoped in this way to increase the interest of young readers in the historal background that has helped to shape their country and their world.”

According to an article I just saw in Horn Book, this year the award was given to, The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz. I took this book home a few months ago and wasn’t sucked in so I returned it. Must try again!

Lucky her, Laura also won the Newbery Medal in 2008 for Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! so she is not unfamiliar with award winning!
